Laser rangefinders, designators, and radars operating in the eye-safe spectral region are required for various army missions. The region around 1.5 microns is particularly attractive. The favored current approach to producing eye-safe lasers is to raman shift the output of Nd:Class, Nd:YaG, or Nd:YLF lasers. We propose to show the feasibility of demonstrating an efficient, all solidstate, diode-pumped Er:GLASS laser operating at 1.54 microns.
