Ateios and its partners have developed a novel electrode manufacturing process to yield safe, solid-state batteries with high energy density (>400 Wh/kg) at high power (C/5, charge rate) by means of superior coating and curing. Ateios is seeking to empower the United States Air Force, by enabling improved manufacturing systems for safe, efficient, and effective energy storage. The primary objective of this proposal is to demonstrate that AteiosÂ’ high-density, solid-state batteries remain safe and perform optimally when integrated into various maritime platforms. The success of this project will be the next step in manufacturing safe, high-energy-dense solid-state batteries and making them available to Americans. More importantly, it will repatriate American battery manufacturing, as only 1% of lithium-ion batteries are manufactured in the U.S. Current-use lithium-ion batteries (LIB) have raised concerns regarding their safety, cost, and environmental impact in several use cases. In contrast, solid-state batteries are significantly safer. Material innovations are rapidly being developed, but outdated manufacturing processes cause a bottleneck that prevents the giga-scaling of solid-state battery manufacturing capacities. The widespread implementation of these innovative new technologies is not possible because solid-state batteries cannot be manufactured en-masse affordably due to the limitations of current battery manufacturing technologies. Ateios intends to develop a novel manufacturing process for safe, solid-state batteries capable of achieving >400 Wh/kg and withstanding fast charging/discharge capability of >C/5 or greater. The batteries developed in this project will undergo strenuous field testing to ensure that they meet Air Force specifications.
