Nodis provides smart glass (TruTint) to create smart windows in buildings and vehicles. Smart windows are electrically controllable, instantly switching color, tint and infrared. The impact is huge: 50% reduction in building energy consumption and 45% reduction in CO2 emissions. In this project, we extend this capability to add energy generation capabilities to our smart glass (TruTint Power). TruTint Power. This combines our TruTint smart glass (to reduce energy usage in buildings and reduce the energy load on vehicle air-conditioning) with the ability for windows to also generate electricity. This combines our smart glass with photovoltaic glass. This then reduces total building energy by up to 70% and results in carbon neutral buildings. Nodis utilizes suspended particle devices that uses color rod-like nanoscale particles that are suspended in an organic liquid. This suspension is then placed between two pieces of glass. The suspended particles are randomly organized which block the light and infrared. When a voltage is applied, the orientation of suspended particles aligns to let the light and infrared separately pass. Varying the voltage leads variation in the orientation of suspended particles, thereby regulation the tint, amount of light passing through them and infrared. Infrared is what heats the building. By controlling how much infrared is allowed in the building we save energy by reducing required heating or cooling energy. We also use multiple layers (Red-Green-Blue) to change the color of the window dynamically. In this project, we then utilize the unused infrared to generate electricity by redirecting it to solar collectors on the windows edge. Nodis smart glass has significant competitive advantages over existing smart glass solutions: Up to 10 times lower cost, Fastest switching smart glass technology < 1sec, Only Color smart glass technology, Pixelized film enables display windows, Infinite tints, IR control: maximizing building energy savings. This project looks at the adjustment to nanoparticle materials to redirect infrared and fabrication of photovoltaic energy generation integrated into Nodis smart windows.
