The Tangle Hawk system is a modular addition to the Counter Unmanned Rapid Engagement System (CURES) to defeat a swarm of small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) and Group 1 sized drones. The purpose of this proposal is to develop the mission planning, communications, and small aerial interceptors needed to engage dozens to hundreds of targets in a sUAS swarm (sUASS). Technology development will include the prototyping of the mission planning, integration of detection/tracking system, interceptor air vehicle and aerial engagement. Recent advancements in collision avoidance and control architectures has moved swarm capabilities into the low cost arena where terrorists and other bad actors can employ multiple sUAS in a swarm to overwhelm countering systems. Demand for a system to detect, identify and engage this expanded threat has opened up a large military and commercial area. The Tangle Hawk system will expand the CURES system to meet this military and commercial demand with a modular system that can engage swarms while minimizing collateral damage and keeping engagement cost low.
