Boom Technology, Inc. is a Colorado-based manufacturer developing an economically viable, fuel efficient, environmentally sustainable supersonic commercial airliner, called Overture. This 55–75-passenger aircraft will cruise at speeds up to Mach 2.2 and altitudes up to 60,000 feet with a range up to 4,500 nautical miles. Boom’s primary customers are the world’s major airlines. Boom is designing Overture to comply with stringent FAA airworthiness and production regulations, and the aircraft will be adaptable to meet specific requirements for military end users. An executive transport derivative of Boom’s supersonic airliner, the “Air Force Overture,” would offer the United States military access to supersonic flight for transport, providing a competitive advantage in areas including diplomacy and crisis response, such as for the recent pandemic. As a useful example of Boom’s innovation and rapid prototyping ability, the company is completing the final assembly of a supersonic demonstrator aircraft, XB-1, which has helped Boom develop and calibrate engineering tools and methods and build civil supersonic aircraft design experience. Flight test is slated to begin in 2021. The timeline of the XB-1 program aligns well with this proposed project and will enable the Air Force to leverage significant private investment in XB-1.
