Orbital Micro Systems intends to submit for Air Force Space Pitch Day. WeatherRecord is a dual-use combined hardware/software system embedded on OMS' GEMS satellites to deliver real-time severe weather alerts directly to pilots and ground-based military and commercial end users. WeatherRecord is a sensor/data type agnostic capability that can handle customer specified parametric alert thresholding and pre-launch algorithm training via historical data sets. WeatherRecord integrates both space and ground segments for data collection, processing, and product delivery.

Phase II

Contract Number: FA8808-20-C-0018

This proposal covers the military use of Orbital Micro Systems' (OMS) WeatherRecord system. WeatherRecord is an anomaly detection/alert system providing near-real-time Nowcast weather data to users. OMS is developing and deploying a commercial fleet of 48 CubeSat-based passive microwave radiometers called the Global Environmental Monitoring System (GEMS). Data collected in these bands provides a unique, 3-dimensional view of atmospheric temperature, humidity, and precipitation. In combination with GEMS data, WeatherRecord can produce near real-time alerts that provide location, precipitation intensity, temperature and altitude of weather events. Potential users of this Nowcasting product include: commercial pilots in flight and their airlines, military pilots, the 557th weather wing, maritime operations, Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and the Navy weather center, FNMOC, SOCOM, ACC and even DARPA.
