Conversion coatings have been utilized by the Air Force as a means of protecting the aluminum surfaces of secondary power system parts from corrosion. Conversion coatings are effective corrosion inhibitors, but they are not durable, and requiring frequent replacement. Landrau Scientific Innovations, LLC (LANSI) proposes to develop an innovative, safe, environmentally compliant, low VOC, and low cost corrosion inhibiting primer that exceeds the performance of currently used conversion coatings. This novel technology will significantly increase the service life of the coating reducing the need for replacement during overhauls. Our technical approach is based on a hybrid polymer containing organic and inorganic components. The proposed coating combines the flexibility and adhesion of a polymer with the hardness and chemical resistance of ceramic. This primer can be applied in the same manner as standard coatings, and when cured, forms a flexible, tough, impact and abrasion resistant, hydrophobic, chemically inert, and corrosion inhibiting coating capable of withstanding extremes in heat and cold (-170 to +175C). These coating properties make it ideal for military and civilian applications (auto, marine, aircraft, etc.). The LANSI hybrid coatings system will serve as the basis for establishing a new set of military standards for corrosion inhibiting technologies.
