A prototype sensing system for high power electromagnetic signals that may present biohazard risks to warfighters is to be developed, integrated within a self-contained package, and demonstrated in a field trial. Based on a concept that will evolve into a wearable electromagnetic-exposure monitor, the prototype will support a photonic electric-field sensor patch, unique all-optical detection and signal-processing techniques for extremely broadband field detection (extending to 300 GHz), and the ability to generate warnings of hazardous conditions. In order to demonstrate the potential functionality of a sensor system that would be worn by personnel, the electromagnetic monitor will include its own independent power source, processing hardware, and wireless communication module for extending warnings and alerts to neighboring warfighter and command-and-control personnel.
