The Air Force has identified a need for a display agnostic common streaming model for 3D data. Third Dimension Technologies (TDT) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have formed a consortium to define a 3D streaming model based on open standards for Display Agnostic 3D Streaming (DA3DS). Two factors are driving this need. The first is the dramatic increase in the collection, storage and transmission of 3D data from a wide array of sensors. The second factor is the emergence of true 3D displays, known as Field of Light Displays (FoLDs), that do not require special eyewear. For Phase II, TDT and ORNL propose a detailed work plan for a 24-month effort to: (1) revise the proposed (Phase I) SMFoLD standard and publish as a Technical Report; (2) implement a complete working system; (3) demonstrate the working system(s) and brief the technical report at multiple scientific and engineering meetings ; (4) conduct a second (and possibly third) SMFoLD workshops; (5) revise the standard and software; (6) work with various standards bodies; and (7) make reference code available. TDT and ORNL bring a wealth of 3D experience to this project including leadership in FoLD displays and considerable industry contacts.
