We propose an image-pointing system that images a very large field of regard at moderate resolution and then selectively images subfields of view at high resolution. Switching from one subfield of view to another is rapid and requires no moving parts. The system can be tailored to operate in either the near-infrared or mid-infrared waveband. In Phase I, we will develop designs of the optical subsystems and demonstrate the key components used in image pointing.

Benefits:
The fact that the wide-angle imaging system operates in the mid-infrared waveband should be valuable in surveillance situations for law enforcement. The nonmechanical image-pointing system is significant in its ability to reduce the footprint of sensors that heretofore had to rely on bulky gimbals.
