This project will develop a method for forming and emplacing a horizontal barrier within a groundwater aquifer to prevent downward migration and further contamination of groundwaters by Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids (NAPLs). Certain properties of the immiscible liquid system act to form the barrier from injected particulate or colloidal materials and to stabilize the barrier once it is formed. Phase I will demonstrate the principles of barrier formation and examine the stability of the barrier with respect to mechanical and chemical forces. Methods of barrier emplacement will be developed and examined for technical feasibility and cost-effectiveness.
