B.A.T. International will test and improve a liquid catalyst for lead-acid batteries that extends battery life 2-4 times, eliminates hydrogen gassing, improves capacity by at least 25% and increases power capability. B.A.T. will work with Electric Power Systems Lab and Optima Battery Co. to undergo a carefully controlled set of tests that evaluate the performance of three different concentrations of catalysts in Optima batteries. Test procedures will replicate the process used by the U.S.A.B.C. for electric vehicle battery research. Performance testing will include constant current, peak power, constant power, variable power and special power tests. B.A.T. will improve the battery catalyst through careful observations of battery performance under testing and further chemical analysis and testing. Further research will lead to the development of catalysts for all types of lead-acid batteries and for all uninterruptable power supply (UPS) applications. Widespread use of the catalyst will lead to tremendous cost savings to the government and private sector in applications such as electric vehicles, car & truck batteries, communications equipment, power stations, and renewable energy systems.
