Because of a lack of adequate flight or ground test data for hypersonic reentry conditions, the design and analysis of existing and future brvs, marvs and decoys will increasingly benefit from the development of accurate and reliable numerical tools for predicting such hypersonic flowfields. To effectively support the design and analysis studies, the numerical schemes require a unique combination of speed and accuracy. The purpose of this sbir effort is to address this need and develop a unified 3-d coupled-chemistry vsl/pns code capable of treating different heatshield materials and applicable over the entire altitude range of 0 to 250 kft. In phase i we will develop axisymmetric coupled-chemistry vsl and pns schemes for teflon ablation into air. Two tet cases will be done, and a final report will be provided at the end of phase i. The follow-on phase ii effort will consider large angle of attack up to 25 deg, five heatshield materials, thermal nonequilibrium, slip effects, ablated nosetips, 3-d lifting configurations and turbulence effects. The final code(s) will be delivered at the end of phase ii together with test cases, final report and user's manual(s).
