The project will evaluate a new type of auditory heads-up cockpit display system (AHUD). The proposed device combines new techniques in three-dimensional sound presentation with a technical innovation. The system can present the pilot with an auditory display of the spatial location of ground or airborne radar targets, as well as other flight data. This auditory input is presented in a way that is completely consistent with the pilot's normal visual information. The system also has the capability of integrating existing auditory displays and communication channels into a single, coherent and display system. Use of the system should result in improved pilot performance and reduced error, especially under high workload conditions. The project will test the feasibility of the proposed AHUD system and consider some practical aspects of its implementation in the aircraft environment.
