A variational technique will be used to compute the electromagnetic fields of traveling waves in a helical slow-wave circuit with helical dielectric support. By generalizing the trial fields from those used in an earlier study and by applying point-matching constraints, an efficient computation will be developed for the phase velocity, interaction impedance, and characteristic impedance over a chosen frequency band. The theory will be verified using results from previous cold test measurements.
