While highly accurate 3D geospatial data is increasingly available, todays commercial products do not incorporate the complex 3D data models and computational capabilities necessary to support geospatial data analysis required by mission planners and warfighters. Without these capabilities, the Future Combat Systems (FCS) vision of fielding a "Future Force" this decade cannot be fully realized. The prototype will demonstrate the feasibility of an ISO 19107 compliant 3D data model incorporating 3D topology and 3D geometry operators as extensions to a commercially available relational database management system (RDBMS). With a topology builder, the user will be able to build, validate, edit, query and display volumetric 3D topology and geometry, incorporating and maintaining data from a range of sources. Implementation of these capabilities in an RDMBS will set a new standard for the industry and spur development of a range of client applications.
Benefits:The reality of todays geo-political world points to the parallel needs of the military and homeland security communities for timely and accurate information to serve as the basis for situation analysis and decision-making. Their manned and unmanned missions require a current understanding of geospatial information on, above, and below the ground. This need is best met by the effective utilization of tools that incorporate topological and geometric operators. Companies such as utilities and mining enterprises with significant infrastructure in urban environments or subterranean facilities would benefit from the use of easy-to-maintain 3D data stores to support business functions such as route planning, facility maintenance, and exploration site selection. The medical fields need for information regarding spatial relationships among chemical or biological objects can also be enhanced through the application of a 3D topology builder. The proposed design will operate in a relationaldatabase management system and meet open standards, thus facilitating its integration with future best-in-breed software tools for a wide array of applications across government and industry.
