For this project, henter math takes its current product, the virtual pencil i (a program which makes arithmetic accessible to blind and disabled students through use of speech, braille, and enhanced graphical interface) and extends it by creating a prototype virtual pencil plus algebra (vp+). The vp+ presents algebraic information in an audible or tactile format with interactive navigation tools. The student with visual disabilities can use this program to learn the process of solving algebraic equations and as a workspace for solving equations. The vp+ provides the user with verbal and nonverbal cues to read the equation and include programmable commands to allow flexibility in navigating and manipulating the equation. There is a serious need for educational software to help students with disabilities, particularly visual disabilities, who cannot use pencil and paper and therefore require an alternative environment for manipulation of numbers.
