Over the past 40 years, the DOE and other government agencies have invested significant funding into the research and development of a wide range of robust, high quality, numerical algorithms for scientific computation. To maintain and support this wealth of high quality software, in the face of enhancements in computer architectures and changes in scientific applications, a more formal mechanism is needed to support the modification and revision of this software. To address this need, this project will integrate a number of existing repositories and tools into a single system, enhancing them as needed to meet the changing requirements of the web and computer architectures. The system will facilitate long term maintenance and support of existing and forthcoming numerical software libraries, facilitate access to these libraries in the ever-changing computational environment, and encourage the development and integration of future tools into this environment. Phase I will demonstrate a prototype repository with relevant and representative sample libraries, using the latest tools for maintenance and support.
Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The existence of a net-aware support and maintenance environment should raise the overall technical standard of scientific software. It also could form the basis for a Computational Software Institute to support the end-to-end development of high quality numerical software
