Originally formed as a manufacturer of advanced transducer materials for ultrasound applications and dba Materials Systems (MSI) from its materials technology roots, the re-named MSI Transducer Corporation has grown into a worldwide supplier of engineered and manufactured components and assemblies for high technology systems customers. The firm's custom-designed products range from acoustic transducers for underwater sonar to industrial ultrasound systems. In December, 2016, the firm was acquired by Airmar Technology Corporation with the acquiring firm being absorbed into and taking the name MSI Transducer. In October 2104, Materials Systems Inc (MSI) had previously been acquired by Channel Technologies Group LLC. Neither transaction changed the firm's SBIR eligibility status. MSI’s proprietary process involves injection molding ceramics to enable the production of high-performance composite transducers at low cost - particularly important for applications such as imaging, hydrographic survey, acoustic communications, and defense.
