In May 2008, Aonex Technologies Inc was acquired by another SBIR firm AmberWave Systems. Aonex was formed as a spin-off from ArrowHead Research, to commercialize a proprietary process for fabricating semiconductor nanomaterials to help device manufacturers reduce costs and improve performance. Research is directed by Dr. Harry Atwater, Howard Hughes Professor of Applied Physics and Materials Science at the California Institute of Technology. The nanomaterials being developed by Aonex might be used to improve a range of different devices in several markets. In the near term, Aonex is focused on applying its technology to next-generation solar cells. Ultimately, the company seeks to enable devices with optical, logical, and amplification features on a single substrate
