As a small firm and SBIR awardee, Specialty Platics was focused to fiberglass and advanced materials coatings for pipe systems. In December 1998, EDO Corporation (NYSE:EDO) acquired Specialty Plastics, Inc. (SPI) to establish a presence in deep water and shallow water offshore oil platforms and petrochemical markets. The firm continued in business as EDO Specialty Plastics at same location. In 2007 Exelis acquired Specialty Plastics as part of the 2007 acquisition of EDO Corporation. In Aprill 2013, Exelis announced it has sold its fiberglass reinforced pipe business, Baton Rouge-based Specialty Plastics Inc., to Future Pipe Industries Group headquartered in Dubai, UAE.
