Firm's name derived from the fact that the Space Projects lImited (SPL) designed and built the controller system for the experietnal bridge in the shuttle bay with flew 30+ missions. Expanded missions included IMAX camera control. A recent posting on Kickstarter to support a project by the original founder's son for a new kind of wearable- a DIY smartwatch with a round display, touch ring, and a powerful CPU! in part tells the story of what happened to that firm. "SPLtd. or Space Projects Ltd. for long, was founded by my father in 1981. The reason for the name is quite simple, dad had won a contract with NASA to build the handheld experiment controller for the Space Shuttle, so he thought Space Projects would be a fitting name for his new company. We carried on the name because it reminds us of him, and it reminds us to think big when it comes to small things. Over the years we have built mass assembly machines, radios, power system controllers, and a myriad of other projects for various customers. Now that a third generation of family is working at SPL, we are changing directions, moving into the retail world of electronics with what we hope will be an ever expanding line of programmable devices that will fill a missing niche, the finished do it yourself project!
