PhotoSonix Medical is developing CLENS™ (Coincident Light Energy and Non-focused ultraSound), a propriety energy-based therapy that combines light and ultrasound to treat chronic bacterial infections known as biofilms. Ultrasonic energy boosts the metabolism of bacteria, which are then more susceptible to treatment by light energy stimulation of oxygen radicals that are toxic to bacteria. The company's initial focus is on treating moderate to severe acne. PhotoSonix's treatment of acne has achieved in vitro (lab) and in vivo (live tissue) test results and is being marketed as a non-drug, at-home prescription treatment for patients (approximately 5 million in the U.S.) who seek physician treatment for acne. The CLENS System consists of a small base unit, single hand-piece, and single-use disposables.
