A highly innovative pump concept for Navy wastewater disposal systems is proposed that will greatly increase reliability and maintainability over present systems. This innovative design concept incorporates a hermetic design that completely eliminates the troublesome pump seal and utilizes a unique mechanism chopping solids at the pump inlet. The pump motor and bearing system is cooled, lubricated, and purged with readily available seawater thus eliminating the typical oil system. After researching and defining requirements for the high reliability/maintainability CHT pump, Barber-Nichols will design, develop and test several configurations of the chopper mechanism to optimize the design of the Phase II effort. Final preliminary analysis, material selection, and a conceptual design layout will be completed that incorporated the findings of this effort. The Phase I effort will be completed with a detailed final report.
