Our SBIR will systematically apply our and other's previous research on integrating basic skills and job-related training to a new generation of instructional environments for teaching SCANS competencies using job-specific content. In Phase I, we created a prototype web-based simulation of the activities, problems, and interactions surrounding a job-related topic (http://www.lexiconsys.com/SCANS_prototype.html). Using this simulation, the learner could practice components of the foundation skills as well as the five workplace competencies within the context of a simulated workday. In Phase II we will expand this simulation in depth and breadth by adding addition scenes and work contexts. We will also test this material at six satellite locations across the country. The program development, content, and evaluation will all be done on the web.Summary of Anticipated Results and Implications:While it is important that schools adopt and teach the SCANS competencies, it is the employers who are now facing the gap between employees' current skill levels and the needs of the high-performance workplace. This SBIR will result in instructional materials that address this need by embedding support and practice in the SCANS competencies in realistic simulations of work activities in customer service, health care, and manufacturing. We anticipate that Phase II will lead into a Phase III, web-based training environment that delivers high-quality, low cost materials to work sites, schools, and adult basic education programs.
