Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPO's) need a cost effective survey processing system for the collection of household travel survey data at fine levels of spatial resolution. The integration of a computer based Geographic Information System (GIS) and Survey Processing System (SPS) promises to alleviate the demands of manual geocoding of household survey origin and destination points. The objective of this research and development project is to determine the feasibility of developing a fully integrated GIS-enabled survey processing system that supports both computer-assisted telephone (CATI) interviewing and computer assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) using a touch-screen or pen-based interface. This research and development effort will determine specific system requirements by documenting existing and future MPO needs. Once these requirements are defined, GeoSystems Global Corporation will evaluate the compatibility and the integration possibilities of existing and proven systems in the fields of GIS and SPS for the development of a GIS-enabled survey processing system.Anticipated results/potential commercial applicationsThe anticipated outcome of this research and development project is the selection and recommendation of key core technologies for the development of an integrated GIS-enabled survey processing prototype. The results of this study will lay down the groundwork for the development of an enhanced household survey travel data collection system for transportation planning organizations and survey contractors as well as systems for commercial applications of transportation surveys, health surveys, marketing surveys and customer service.
