Liebrock-Hicks Research proposes developing a program transformation system, based on problem topology, capable of reducing the programmer/user effort necessary in parallelization of composite grid applications. The work specifically targets large scale applications such as aerodynamic simulations. Users will write parallel High Performance Fortran programs without specifying the mapping of data to the parallel architecture. A programming style for writing such applications will also be developed. This transformation system will convert High Performance Fortran programs, without distribution specifications, into standard High Performance Fortran programs with full distribution specification. The transformation process will generate and modify clones to support communication optimization. Transformed applications will read and implement data distribution specifications that are generated automatically. The proposed Phase I effort will demonstrate that automatic program transformation can be used on High Performance Fortran, composite grid programs conforming to specified style, in conjunction with automatic data mapping, to eliminate programmer intervention in mapping data in composite grid applications to parallel processors. A programming style specification, a transformation algorithm, and a prototype aerodynamic application will be developed to support this goal.
