One of the most interesting wavelengths for many science and engineering applications is the mid-infrared band. We propose to develop a new compact tunable laser with output wavelength from 3 to 4 micrometers, pumped by powerful AlGaAs semiconductor lasers. The laser will use a new and less-explored lasing material, Co doped II-VI semiconductors, as the gain medium. The lasing medium has a strong absorption band matching the wavelength of the AlGaAs semiconductor laser, and a wide emission band at mid-IR. Experimental work will include measurements of optical and spectroscopic properties of the Co:ZnTe crystals including absorption spectrum measurement using FT-IR spectrometers and emission spectrum measurement usinge a monochrometer, laser cavity design, testing of pumping configurations, and measurements of laser parameters. Tuning of the output wavelength will be done using an intra-cavity tunable acousto-optic filter. Since the lasing level lifetime is very large, we expect the laser to have a good coherence. We hope to demonstrate this new laser and to find a roadmap for optimizing the laser material, pump mechanism, and laser performance. Prototype product will be built during the phase I research. Applications of the laser in science and engineering will be considered during its construction. A tunable solid state laser with milliwatts output power at 3-4 micrometer wavelengths.
