Thermal control of a space satellite is usuall yaccomplished by balancing the energy emitted as infrared radiation against the energy dissipated by internal electrical (and other) sources plusenergy absorbed from the enviornment. Due tochanging conditions as the satellite orbits thereis strong need for a simple thermal controlsurface operable with low electric power.Electrochromic optical switches showelectrochromic infrared optical switching devicehas been demonstrated. These devices were madewith thin layers of WO3, organic ion conductor, and NiO ion storage layer. Devices weresuccessfullly operated, covering the spectralrange 300 nm to 30 microns, and reversible switching demonstrated repeatedly. We now seekthe opportunity to carry out Phase II research toachieve large-area, long-life, thermal controlsurfaces, and to be ready for Phase IIIcommercialization.
