Viewing the horizon is helpful in reducing the symptoms of motion sickness in shipboard personnel. Many of a ship's complement are required to constantly monitor visual displays that are fixed to the deck and provide no view of the horizon. Virtual I-O! proposes a research study where horizon information is provided in combination with a visual display mounted on the head. This information will assist the user in orienting their head according to the gravity vector. The research study will assess the ability of this technique to reduce motion sickness in a simulated sea motion environment. Two horizon cue types will be tested: one where the full display moves relative to gravity and the other where only peripheral cues are provided.
