SDL proposes to develop a novel low-cost coupling scheme for robust, efficient coupling of novel high-power semiconductor laser diodes to single-mode optical fibers. By exploiting the unique optical properties of a new 1W+ diffraction-limited laser, it is possible to simultaneously realize low piece parts cost, simple alignment and assembly, and a robust, space/airframe qualifiable package.|
Benefits: The technology developed under this effort will benefit terrestrial and airframe fiber optics, fiber-coupled IRCM, telecommunications and optical computing, and rare-earth doped fiber amplifiers.
