Remediation of petroleum contaminated soils for remote site cleanup typically involves two options. Due to the remoteness and inaccessibility of many of Alaska's rural contaminated sites, off-site treatment is often impractical. The remediation option chosen at any site is based on the availability of the area for on-site treatment, time for completion, and money. Many of Alaska's contaminated sites have an abundance of space and time, making on-site remediation a viable alternative. The proposed program is directed at demonstrating the feasibility of using an on-site, remotelycontrolled and monitored process to optimize remediation of contaminated soil at inaccessible rural areas. Environmental parameters are configured to enhance biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons present in contaminated soil. The remediation process is accomplished through the use of a uniquely designed monitoring and control system.Applications:The results of our research will provide a system for automated monitoring and controlling of on-site bioremediation of soils contaminated by substances containing hydrocarbons. It will be ideal for rural contaminated sites where qualified maintenance personnel are not available without long travel times. in rural areas where transportation costs are very high, the cost benefits of this system make on-site bioremediation a viable, if not cost saving, alternative to other methods.
