Tetra Corporation proposes to investigate an innovative treatment process for the combined removal of metallic ions and the destruction of volatile organic chemicals in waste water. Both metal ion and volatile organic contaminants are commonly found in water. Tetra Corporation would thus propose to investigate the removal of metal ions and the destruction of volatile organic chemicals from contaminated water using high energy electrons directly injected into a water stream along with a catalyst. Titanium dioxide has been selected as the catalyst. To "activate" the catalyst, the electron beam will be directly injected into the waste stream consisting of titanium dioxide, metal ions, and oxidant, and the volatile organic chemicals. Anticipated
Benefits: The simultaneous removal of metal ions and the destruction of volatile organic chemicals would reduce the cost of treating contaminated water substantially. Tetra proposes to develop a small, compact, electron beam treatment system which is economical for metal ion removal and simultaneous destruction of volatile organic chemicals.
