We propose innovative approaches to prepare novel high conductivity lithium polymer solid electrolyte materials and investigate them for lithium Manganese dioxide battery system. Three types of novel perfluoroalklsulfonimide - based lithium salts will be prepared and characterized for electrochemical stability. Thin films of solid lithium polymer electrolytes will be prepared using lithium imide salts and two types of polymers polyethylene oxide and polyacrylonitrile. under anhydrous conditions. Lithium polymer electrolytes with different lithium to polymer ratios and thicknesses will be prepared and evaluated for their conductivities at room temperature. The solid polymer electrolyte will be evaluated for discharge and charge characteristics in laboratory prototype battery cells with lithium anode and manganese dioxide cathode. New polymer electrolyte materials. particularly with high voltage cathodes. have the potential for high energy density and long cycle life batteries for Space Station. Space Vehicle and Advanced Spacecraft.Safe, long cycle life. high energy density lithium rechargeable batteries at reasonable cost find applications in electronic products such as laptop computers. cellular phones and remote telecommunication systems. They find use in camcorders. power tools and for computer memory backup power. Large bipolar units in electric vehicle propulsion and energy storage for load leveling.
