The goal of this program is to devise a methodology for the evaluation of the EW Vulnerability of complex communication systems imbedded in a network. In order to develop this methodology the parameters of the communication system must be identified and defined, the interrelationships among these parameters must be identified, the interference waveforms must be assessed, the network structure and composition must be determined, measures of performance must be established and defined, and algorithms relating the measures of performance to the parameters, interrelationships, interference waveforms, and network structure must be derived. Included in the assessment task is the invention of simple meaningful methods of presenting the results. The benefits of this program include the establishment of a standardized methodology for evaluating the performance of netted communication systems in a stressed environment. Commercial applications include the evaluation of radio telephone systems in local area networks which are stressed by self interference, background noise, and fading signals. The use of a well defined consistent methodology in assessing performance of competing systems and evaluating changes and improvements in systems will benefit both industry and the Government.
Benefits: The standardized methodology for the evaluation of performance of communication systems in an EW environment will benefit future military assessments of stressed communication networks. There is a potential commercial application in the evaluation of radio telephone networks subjected to interference, noise, and fading.
