There are a variety of advanced development programs which require the use of a very efficient, small, rugged white light source for aircraft applications. Todate, systems have been designed to use existing commercially available sources instead of performing the system-source design integration needed to optimize system performance. The proposal concentrates on the system impact of each of the source parameters. It identifies the problems that have been encountered in the field, offers possible solutions, and outlines a seven task program. The seven tasks call for a market survey, source testing, system impact analysis, concept evaluation, manufacturer interface, source specification generation and a final report with recommendations.
