During Phase I, we will develop an algorithm to calculate the forces generated due to the impact of aircraft structures with soil. This algorithm will be integrated with the current KRASH program as an external force acting on the various mass elements that are defined in KRASH. The failure of soil due to the impact of the aircraft and dragging of the aircraft along the surface will be modeled taking into account the failure modes and failure theories of soils and geologic materials and including frictional and cohesive characteristics of the soil. During Phase I, we will also study the feasibility of creating pre- and post-processors for the KRASH program. We will also examine the possibility of using output from KRASH to exercise the Dynaman occupant simulation program. This will make it possible for analysts to examine the effects of the primary impact, namely, aircraft crash, on the survivability of aircraft occupants. We plan to carry out these activities during Phase II of the project.
