In Phase One we propose to develop a prototype computerized health care service named MediMinder. MediMinder is a "voice mail" system specifically designed for the needs of the elders patient. Once tested an validated in Phase Two, it will provide an inexpensive, automated system to provide three general types of services: a) preventative care "service calls" reminding elders of such things as influenza vaccinations, cancer check-ups, and appointments; b) "follow-up calls" to monitor recovery afte surgery, serious illness, or possible adverse drug affects; and c) "emergency alert calls" when sudden life threatening situations occur. Th MediMinder system has three components: a) Microcomputer system, b) Additional voice mail hardware, and c) Controlling software. To use MediMinder, the health care provider creates a vocabulary of spoken words that are digitized and stored on the computer's hard disk. Using this vocabulary the health care provider types instructions and questions at th keyboard to be sent, via MediMinder to their patients. MediMinder contact these patients and "speaks" the questions or instructions in the health care provider's voice. The patient responds by pressing numbers on the telephone number pad.The estimated retail price for MediMinder will be less than $10,000. This low price makes possible the following three vertical markets:a) health care providers in private practice,b) health care clinics,c) medical centers and hospitals, andd) any other private, state, or federal health care service agency.National Institute on Aging (NIA)

Phase II

The long-term objective of the MediMinder project is to provide an inexpensive, automated voice mail system to:(1) improve utilization of preventative health care services such as influenza vaccines and cancer checkups,(2) increase monitoring of recovering outpatients after surgery or other serious illness,(3) increase monitoring for adverse reactions when new medications are used,(4) provide an emergency alert system in the event of a life-threatening condition, and(5) increase use of social services. These goals will be achieved by employing recent advances in the microcomputer and voice mail hardware industry, by developing software to control the voice mail hardware, and by empirically validating the effectiveness of the MediMinder system at a variety of test sites that are representative of the potential markets.Awardee's statement of the potential commercial applications of the research:Vertical markets for MediMinder include:(1) physicians with private practices;(2) health care clinics;(3) large facilities such as hospitals and medical centers;(4) other state, Federal, and private agencies that provide outpatient health care services;(5) and senior citizen centers.National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)
