The transfer of DNA into cells is of critical importance for gene transformation. We are developing a technique that is simpler, less expensive, and more precisely controlled than currently available. Using micro-probes with very sharp points, we will introduce DNA directly into cells. The locations of the gene introduction can be easily and precisely controlled. In production, the cost of this injection will be a few dollars. The exact details of the probes are proprietary, and described in the proposal body.
Anticipated Results:Almost all major universities and research laboratories conducting gene transformation research are equipped with one or more Biolistic gene guns. Although the actual number of the Biolistic guns in use is not available, the economic potential is large. It is commercially important to developing an alternative and more effective gene transfer mechanism. This proposal will develop a superior method of transferring genes.
