Altaeros was founded to operationalize technology developed at MIT with the objective of deploying the worldÂ’s first commercial airborne wind turbine to harness the abundant energy in strong, steady winds at higher altitudes. That original vision has since crystalized into helping rural and remote communities gain the benefit of state-of-the-art power, communications and other infrastructure. From the outset, AltaerosÂ’ mission had been to deliver the next generation of infrastructure to rural and isolated communities in an economic and environmentally friendly manner. The firm has effectively combined proven technology with flight control innovations to enable cost effective autonomous deployment of tethered airborne platforms. This approach solves the problem of requiring continuous manned operation to deliver a compelling economic value proposition for many applications. The key focus for Altaeros today is in three areas: Enabling the cost effective deployment of ubiquitous telecom service to rural and remote communities; Efficient and clean power generation for rural and isolated communities and Effective deployment of technology enabled agricultural services.
