The Government seeks improved materials for use in pintle shafts for controllable higher temperature solid propulsion systems. UES proposes to use our novel, innovative ultra-high temperature ceramic (UHTC) and fabrication processes. Our UHTCs will provide stable high temperature performance with their unique properties such as high tensile strength, good thermal shock resistance, and low thermal conductivity. We aim to develop pintle shaft materials with the following properties: Zero/near-zero erosion behavior in higher temperature propulsion conditions; High thermal shock resistance; Time-cost efficient processes; Easy machinability for various shapes including sharp angle/radius; Available hybrid system with base structures such as ceramic composites and super-alloys.
