Fibertek proposes to develop and mature systems requires for an ultra-low latency, all optical relay around an in-plane constellation of LEO satellites. The effort addresses the optical terminal, optical add/drop multiplexer and high gain / low noise figure Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA). The primary focus of the proposed is the EDFA as it is the least mature and highest risk sub-system required for the realization of an optical relay. The Phase I program will finalize performance requirements and demonstrate feasibility of the reliable, low cost in volume, and manufacturable EDFA sub-system, setting the stage for a successful Phase II program in which the EDFA will be matured to TRL-6. In addition, the Phase II program will develop an optical relay system design including Fiberteks TRL-6 optical head, coarse pointing mechanism for in-plane links and an optical add/drop multiplexer. A manufacturing transition plan will be started in Phase I and completed in the Phase II supporting a rapid transition to SDA relevant quantities and target costs.
