Interestingly launched and headed up by a lontime experienced Fire Officer, Energy Storage Safety Products International (ESSPI) is structured around providing specialized fire and safety management solutions to activities related to manufacturing, storing, transporting, and/or employing lithium and lithium ion power technologies. The firm has been issued a patent (pending) for its Energy Storage Fire Suppression System - a system is designed to address issues associated specifically with lithium ion battery fires in energy storage configurations that are capable of spontaneous ignition and subsequent explosion due to overheating (think Boeing 787 or Chevy Volt). Overheating may be caused by shorting, rapid discharge, or overcharging - potentially a process (called thermal runaway) which is a chemical reaction within the battery causing the internal temperature and pressure to rise. The firm has patented activity around three focus products. 1.) Fire suppression system for rack configured lithium ion batteries in energy storage modules. This is a unique approach to suppressing potential thermal runaway events associated with lithium ion batteries through cooling, isolation, and containment. 2.) Closed-loop lithium (ion) battery storage and transport systems using multi-tiered fire suppression and containment. The approach here is to protect business and industry from the negative fire effects during all cycles of battery life. Air, sea, land transport and battery storage present considerable risks relative to battery fires. These systems apply fire management technologies that minimize layers of components and provide simple, yet effective, methodologies that are easily stored and transported. and 3.) Fire management and suppression systems for military vehicle applications of lithium ion batteries. This application was developed by LithFire-X at the request of the US Army survivability group (TARDEC, Warren, MI).
