The Federal Highway Administration sponsored research on the electroslag welding process during the 1980's and 1990's. That research, conducted at the Oregon Graduate Center in Beaverton Oregon, improved the EWS process to the point where it is being incorporated into the AWS D1.5 Bridge Welding Code as NGI ESW. EST&D was formed to provide the technology transfer to commercial applications.
