In May 2017, it was announced that Sharklet had been acquired by Peaceful Union a Chinese equity medical device firm. Early involved in SBIR, Sharklet Technologies, LLC is a biotechnology and life sciences company having developed a surface texture to inhibit microorganism growth. The company provides Sharklet - a microscopic patterned surface technology that inhibits bacteria from growing, colonizing, and forming biofilms. The pattern, developed after studies of the microbrial-resistant properties of shark skin, employs millions of microscopic diamonds. The company offers adhesive-backed films that can be applied to germ-prone areas including bathroom doors, push doors in food service areas, hygienic receptacles, healthcare facilities, and other surfaces to reduce the transfer of germs from person to person. Sharklet also licenses its technology to companies for applications in OEM products. The company is developing medical applications for its technology including a Sharklet urinary catheter that reduces hospital-acquired infections, a novel wound dressing, and ventilator tubes. In addition to its medical applications, Sharklet is exploring using its technology for non-medical applications such as cell phone cases. Sharklet Technologies has licensed its technology to Cook Medical's urology division.
