To overcome the 5G vulnerability limitations and enable resilient tactical ad-hoc networks, Pi Radio will integrate lens antennas and leverage a fully-digital beamforming architecture to enhance resiliency to jamming, improve privacy and and support authentication. The cybersecurity center members at NYU are using the 5G mmWave cellular system developed by Pi Radio, to design novel security primitives and protocols to build on the existing NR standard. This will yield a distributed authentication protocol (replacing the Random Access protocol), a novel key generation algorithm that leverages the randomness of the mmWave channel and a method to periodically update the encryption key.
