The creation of a physics-based modeling tool to predict the potential residual stress benefits of laser peening while avoiding deleterious effects that may compromise the potential benefit is of significant value to DoD and Industry. An effective modeling tool will need to accurately predict the benefits and significantly reduce implementation time and costs. The validated model outputs of shockwave magnitudes, residual stress profiles, and the interaction of shockwaves with microstructural features enables new optimization capabilities that are currently unavailable. This specifically allows tailoring of process conditions to unique parts and in-service demands. A physics-based modeling tool will enable transitions into non-aerospace markets by expanding the materials focus. In addition, explicit dynamics models of other surface enhancement processes, such as shot peening or burnishing techniques, can also be incorporated into the toolset.
