New technologies are needed to increase the cost effectiveness of the current light water reactor fleet as well as support materials test reactors and transient test reactors, in keeping with the GAIN initiative for cross-cutting technology. Advances in sensors and instrumentation for visual inspection and accountability are of particular interest. To address this need, Vega Wave Systems, Inc. will adapt its proprietary advanced, radiation hard vision system for fuel-cycle applications. This new system is expected to improve the material handling and accountability and reduce the time required for refueling and inspections, thus reducing the costs of the refueling cycle and enabling close inspection of fuel assemblies and reactor infrastructure. The vision system developed in this program will enable improved inspection of remote handling of radioactive materials for nuclear energy. This will also be useful improved inspection of remote handling of radioactive materials for nuclear physics, spent fuel, and nuclear accident sites.
