Originally organized around technology licensed from Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and the University of New Mexico (UNM) for a radiation-hard material, Qynergy was initially structured around developing a power generator (betavoltaic device) for trickle charging batteries or capacitors - demonstrated high efficiency (~11%) and high power (>15uW) betavoltaic devices. The firm then diversified into other technology areas including materials, power & energy and detection with a focus on developing technologies for the government customer. In 2012 Qynergy developed a technology accelerator model to address the fact that Government customers typically have problems often having unique and novel solutions having limited - if any - commercial relevance. Addresing integrated hybrids of radioisotope-fueled energy cells, photovoltaics, energy-harvesting systems, advanced lithium batteries.energy-harvesting systems, and advanced lithium batteries, two of the several technologies for specialist government application on which Qnergy has worked have evolved to the stage of being transitioned to platform applications/qualification.
