Resident in the Chicago-based health-tech incubator Matter, the medical device start-up Simergent LLC has developed the Archimedes automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) device intended to provide patients who require kidney dialysis a safe, effective, affordable alternative to clinical treatment. The firm's home dialysis device is an easy to use and affordable automated peritoneal dialysis device designed specifically to address the critical healthcare needs of the 2.3 million patients estimated in developing nations and elsewhere to die each year because currently they either cannot afford or have limited/no access to viable dialysis treatment. The device addresses specific needs for emerging markets such as those having low-literacy, and/or in rural-use environments.
